Screening & Identification Instruments

  • Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)
  • Stanford Achievement Test, 10th edition
  • Terra Nova, the 2nd CAT and 3rd editions
  • Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), Form C, Complete Battery
  • Woodcock Johnson IV, Tests of Individual Achievement
  • PSAT/SAT/ACT

Identification criteria

Score at 95th percentile or above in one or more of the specific academic areas of: reading/writing (ELA), mathematics, science, and/or social studies.

Screening criteria

Score at the 94th percentile in the specific academic area(s) of reading or mathematics.

Superior Cognitive Ability

Assessments the district administers that provide for superior cognitive identification

  • Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), Form 7: ID=128 or above/Retest offered if score=127, Grades 3,4
  • InView, A Measure of Cognitive Abilities: ID=128 or above/Retest offered if score=127, All Grades
  • Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test - 2nd edition: ID=124 or above/Retest offered if score=123 on Group Ability Test; ID=125 or above/Retest offered if score=124 on Individual Ability Test Grades KG-6; ID=126 or above/Retest offered if score=125 on Individual Ability Test, Grades 7-12
  • Otis Lennon School Ability Test, 8th edition (OLSAT 8): ID=126 or above/Retest offered if score=125, All Grades
  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition: ID=128 or above/Retest offered if score=127, All Grades
  • Woodcock Johnson IV, Tests of Cognitive Abilities: ID=128 or above/ Retest offered if score=127, All Grades


Creative Thinking Ability

Assessments the district administers that provide for creative thinking identification

  • Scales for Rating the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students (SRBCSS) ID=51 or above/Screen=48-50, All Grades.
  • Gifted and Talented Evaluation Scale 3, (GATES) ID=83 or above/ Screen=65-82, All Grades.

*In addition, a cognitive abilities score that is one standard deviation above the mean minus the standard error of measure on any of the aforementioned ability assessments.


Visual and Performing Arts

District will Refer to ODE Gifted Education Fact Sheet (2/2015)- Performance component and Checklist Component

A child shall be identified as exhibiting “visual or performing arts ability” superior to that of children of similar age if the child has exhibited to a trained individual sufficient performance, as established by the department of education, on an approved checklist of behaviors related to a specific arts area.
