Gifted Service for Cognitively Gifted Middle School Students - Cog Ed:

Dublin City Schools provides gifted services at the middle school level for qualifying 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. The Gifted Intervention Specialist (GIS) at each of our four middle schools leads an elective trimester course which further supports the academic and social-emotional growth of cognitively gifted students. Qualifying students will have a cognitive gifted identification on an approved ability assessment from spring of third grade or above. Students who have moved into Dublin Schools and have not participated in testing within Dublin must provide a qualifying score from an ODE approved ability assessment that was administered within the previous 24 months.

The Cog Ed trimester elective course for qualifying cognitively gifted middle school students will place an emphasis on developing and supporting each learner through:
  • Habits of mind
  • Skills for success
  • Focus and understanding of process and product as it relates to learning goals
  • Executive functioning skills and organizational strategies
  • Preparation for high school course selection and planning
  • Research and Project Based Learning

An emphasis is placed upon Ohio’s New Learning Standards, “To be ready for college, workforce training, and life in a technological society, students need the ability to gather, comprehend, evaluate, synthesize, and report on information and ideas, to conduct original research in order to answer questions or solve problems, and to analyze and create a high volume and extensive range of print and non-print texts in a variety of media forms. The need to conduct research and to produce and consume media is embedded into every aspect of today’s curriculum. In like fashion, research and media skills and understandings are embedded throughout the Standards rather than treated in a separate section.“
Student work in Cog Ed will incorporate the following:
  • Conduct short as well as more sustained research for a capstone project based on focused questions while demonstrating an understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • Gather relevant information from multiple sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information through creativity and critical thinking.
  • Draw evidence from literary, informational texts, and collaboration to support analysis, reflection, and research to produce a capstone project
