Gifted Service for Cognitively Gifted Middle School Students - Cog Ed:
Dublin City Schools provides gifted services at the middle school level for qualifying 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. The Gifted Intervention Specialist (GIS) at each of our four middle schools leads an elective trimester course which further supports the academic and social-emotional growth of cognitively gifted students. Qualifying students will have a cognitive gifted identification on an approved ability assessment from KG-8th grade. Students who have moved into Dublin Schools and have not participated in testing within Dublin must provide a qualifying score from an ODE approved ability assessment that was administered within the previous 24 months. Students may also participate in early fall and spring gifted identification referral testing.
All sixth grade students will participate in a group ability assessment in the spring; no referral is needed for participation in that assessment.
The Cog Ed trimester elective course for qualifying cognitively gifted middle school students will place an emphasis on developing and supporting each learner through:
    Habits of mind

    ...
When your child is registered and enrolled within Dublin City Schools through our central office new student registration process, the parent/guardian has the opportunity to indicate that their child has a previous gifted identification and/or is participating in a gifted service within their previous school district. In Ohio, local school districts may determine their own gifted service model and gifted service criteria for placement. It is important for parents/guardians to understand that gifted service within one school district may not be, nor must be, the same at any or all school districts within Ohio or the country.
Recommended first step is to make sure that all of your child’s nationally normed standardized testing records be included in the documentation sent from the previous school district to our district. Once records have been received within your child's new school building, the GIS or myself reviews these for test administration and scores that meet the gifted identification criteria established by the Ohio Department of Education. It may also be helpful to call the DCS office of gifted services at 614-760-4350 to share information and clarify any questions regarding your child and gifted services placement within Dublin City Schools.

Most important to keep in mind is that class size for our cog pullout and cog ed gifted services is a maximum of twenty students per class period. There may be cog services pullout classes that are capped due to this ODE requirement.

    ...
Support for gifted students in the area of mathematics is provided by high quality, differentiated learning experiences in grades KG - 4. In spring of a student's 4th grade school year, multiple data points such as MAP scores, cognitive ability scores and teacher input assist us in recommending students for accelerated math as a 5th grade student. This same process is implemented again at the end of 5th grade and 6th grade for math course placement for the following school year.
The district has three pathways for math course progression which meet the needs of the vast majority of students. There are always unique exceptions when an extremely high achieving, high ability student may need earlier or further acceleration. These are addressed through the RtI process at the elementary and middle school level and credit flex or college credit plus at the high school level.
